The popularity of this work rests on Gibbon's objectivity and heavy use of primary sources. In the eighteenth century the use of primary sources for historical was very rare which was why his work was extremely popular. His methodology also became a model for later historians.

Condition
Bound in full contemporary straight grain morocco. Externally very smart with minimal edge wear, marks to the boards, front joint starting to 'Vol XII', and slight cracking to the spines. Bookplate of a 'Hugh McCalmont', marks to the pastedowns, heaviest to the rear pastedown to 'Vol III'. Internally firmly bound with bright pages and the odd spot, heavier to the front and rear, and occasional offsetting to the title pages.
