Eight volumes of a nine volume set, lacking volume nine. With a portrait frontispiece to volume one. A collection of the works of Benjamin Jonson, an English playwright and poet whose artistry exerted a lasting influence on English poetry and stage comedy. With critical and explanatory notes and a biographical memoir from William Gifford, an English critic, editor and poet, famous as a satirist and controversialist. Volume one contains memoirs of Jonson and Every Man In His Humour. Volume two contains Every Man Out of His Humour, Cynthia's Revels, and The Poetaster. Volume three contains Sejanus, The Fox, and The Silent Woman. Volume four contains The Alchemist, Catiline, and Bartholomew Fair. Volume five contains The Devil is an Ass, The Staple of News, and The New Inn. Volume six contains The Magnetic Lady, A Tale of a Tub, The Sad Shepherd, The Case is Altered, and Entertainments. Volume seven contains Masques at Court. Volume eight contains Masques, Epigrams, and Underwoods. Previously held in the library of Frederick Edwin Smith, 1st Earl of Birkenhead, a British Conservative politician and barrister who attained high office in the early twentieth century as Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. He is best remembered today as Winston Churchill's greatest personal and political friend. Smith was created Viscount Birkenhead, of Birkenhead in the County of Chester, in the 1921 Birthday Honours, then Viscount Furneaux, of Charlton in the County of Northampton, and finally Earl of Birkenhead in 1922.
Condition
Bound in half straight grained morocco with cloth covered boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spines with the odd small mark to the boards. Light loss to the heads of the spines. Front hinge starting but firm to volume eight. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Minor age toning to the endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
