What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Leather Binding, Rebound
Handsomely bound copies of the first, second, and third series of Tales of My Landlord by Sir Walter Scott.
Tales of My Landlord is a collection of novels that form a subset of Walter Scott's larger anthology, 'The Waverley Novels'. It contains four series of charming tales.
Written by Sir Walter Scott under the pseudonym Jedediah Cleishbotham, schoolmaster and parish-clerk of Gandercleugh. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a Scottish playwright, historical novelist, and poet who is often credited for establishing the historical fiction sub-genre.
This set contains the first, second, and third series, all in first editions, and all with half titles present.
The first series was published by William Blackwood in 1816, and is complete in four volumes. The novels present are The Black Dwarf, which is set on the Scottish Borders in 1707 and The Tale of Old Mortality which is set in Southern Scotland in the years 1679-1689. The Tale of Old Mortality is often deemed by critics to be one of Scott's best works, and it appeared here first.
The second series was published by Archibald Constable & Company in 1818, and is noted by the misspelling of the word 'witchcraft' to page 52 in Volume II. It is complete in four volumes. The second series contains The Heart of Mid-Lothian, which tells the story of a working-class young girl attempting to gain a pardon for her sister for the alleged murder of her baby.
The third series was published by Archibald Constable & Company in 1819, and is complete in four volumes. The third series contains The Bride of Lammermoor, a historical novel set in the Lammermuir Hills of south-east Scotland, and A Legend of Montrose set in seventeenth-century Scotland during the War of the Three Kingdoms.
Previous owner's ink signatures to the title pages of all the volumes to the third series.
A lovely, uniformly bound set of these works in first editions.
Condition
In uniform half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, smart, with some rubbing to the spines and light shelf wear to the boards. Previous owner's ink signatures to the title pages of all the volumes to the third series. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. A small amount of loss to the title page of Volume I of the second series. Some light spots to the first and last few pages of each volume, and some light offsetting to the odd page, though many pages remain bright and clean, especially considering the age of the work.
