The first edition thus of this impressive nineteen volume collection of the works of Jonathan Swift, an Anglo-Irish writer who is remembered for works such as 'A Tale of a Tub' and 'Gulliver's Travels'. 

He is regarded by the Encyclopædia Britannica as the "foremost prose satirist in the English language."

This set is edited by Sir Walter Scott himself. This edition was a landmark in Swiftian studies, shaping perceptions of Swift for decades.

Frontispiece and one further plate to volume I. Collated, complete.

This set aimed to provide a comprehensive and authoritative collection of Swift’s works, including his poetry, prose, and correspondence. It includes a number of previously unpublished letters, essays, and poems.

Scott supplemented the texts with extensive notes, annotations, and a detailed biographical account of Swift's life.

Condition

In half calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Light rubbing to joints, back strip heads, and centre of boards. Volume I hinges strained, and a touch tender. Front hinges of volume III, VIII, IX strained, but firmly held. Volume XII hinges strained, and a touch tender. Internally, firmly bound. Significant spotting throughout volume I. Spotting to title pages and first and last few leaves of each volume, with pages otherwise generally clean and bright.
