1814 Lara, a Tale and Jacqueline, a Tale
What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Leather Binding
The first edition of this work published by J. Murray of Albemarle Street, rebacked in a full calf binding with the original calf laid down to the boards. Bookplate to the front paste down. Ink inscriptions to the second blank page. Lara, A Tale, a rhymed tragic narrative poem, was first published anonymously by Lord Byron in 1814 alongside Jacqueline, a Tale, a poem which was not written by him. In this first edition, there is no indication that separate authors wrote each narrative poem; however, we now know that Lord Byron wrote Lara, a Tale, and the English poet Samuel Rogers wrote Jacqueline, a Tale. 2 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.
Condition
Rebacked in a full calf binding with the original calf laid down to the boards. Externally very smart, with just some wear to the extremities. Gilt remains bright. Remnants of an amateur repair, presumably to reinforce the front hinge, to the front paste down and front free end paper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright but with some offsetting to the text, and a scattering of spots to the first few pages.
