Description

First Edition, Leather Binding

The first work is the 1821 second issue, variant A of 'Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice', with the Doge's speech on page 151 reaching eleven lines, and with page 101 miss-numbered as called for.

This is a blank verse tragedy by Byron, inspired when he was looking at portraits of the Doges in Venice in the Palazzo Ducale, and saw that the portrait of Faliero had been blacked out.

Byron's play is set in Venice in 1355, with Faliero having been recently elected as Doge of Venice, and follows Faliero through is failed coup d'etat and subsequent execution.

Including the poem 'The Prophecy of Dante'.

The second work is the 1814 first edition, third issue of 'The Corsair, A Tale'.

The final twenty pages of this work are lacking, and instead supplied in neatly handwritten facsimile.

This is a long tale in verse which narrates the story of the corsair or privateer Conrad.

With the bookplate of R. B. Mathews to the front pastedown.

Present at the birth of Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein', and widely gossiped and written about during and after his lifetime, this collection presents the works of one of the most famous poets in the English language, notorious for his controversial life.
