The poem was both a popular and critical success, widely recognised as Scott's best poem to date, and praised for its vigorous and well-conducted story and for the work's moral beauty.
Condition
Rebound in half calf binding over marbled boards, renewed endpapers, half title present. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear, minor sunning to spine. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting affecting the first and last few leaves and odd page, otherwise pages generally clean with some age toning, as usual with the type of paper used.
