An important history of Oxford, framed around the writers, bishops and other eminent figures who were educated at the famous University from 1500 to 1695. Comprising detailed biographies on the lives and writings of these men.
Written by Anthony Wood, an English antiquary widely regarded for his meticulous research and documentation of Oxford, despite some criticism for errors and suspected biases. This work was gradually completed after Wood took the Oath of Supremacy, a decision he made to relieve himself from suspicion of involvement in the Popish Plot. However, the work did lead to his expulsion from the University for a libel on the 1st Earl of Clarendon (Breslauer & Folter 87).
To which are added the Fasti, or Annals of the University, appearing in Volume II and IV. This edition has also been substantially expanded to include Wood's autobiography; his last will and testament; an account of libel proceedings against Wood; Wood's pedigree; and more.
From the library of Roundell Palmer, 1st Earl of Selborne (1812-1895), an English lawyer and politician who served twice as Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. With his bookplate bearing his coat of arms to the front paste downs.
