Illustrated, Leather Binding

Author Duncan MacDonald offers a comprehensive domestic manual offering over a thousand recipes and directions for all aspects of household cookery, including meat, fish, poultry, game, soups, sauces, pickles, and confectionery.

He includes instructions on carving, marketing, preparing medicinal drinks, and managing a household.

Collated, illustrated with a frontispiece and nine further engraved plates. Collated, lacking one plate.

Undated; dated 1812 via the Wellcome Library.

The author was "head cook at the Bedford Tavern and Hotel, Covent Garden."

Loosely inserted is handwritten medical advice from 1888 from a medical practitioner named Leopold Saville, for a married lady suffering from gastric distress and constipation. He discusses making a scrofolosol phial, dosing the patient, and the importance of avoiding vinegar in the diet. He advises that claret or red Burgundy may be consumed in moderation.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Rubbing to back strip, joints and boards. Small loss of calf to back strip head. Paper residue to front board. Front joint head starting, with board firmly held. Rear hinge strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned, with spotting and handling marks throughout, most concentrated to page perimeters. Lacking one plate.
