A very scarce enlarged edition of James Hampton's translation of Polybius's 'General History of the Wars of the Romans', complete in a single volume.
Polybius, a Greek historian of the middle Hellenistic period, is noted for his account of the rise of Rome in the second and third centuries BC. 'The Histories', his magnum opus, documents the Punic Wars and Macedonian Wars among many others.
Hampton began translating the works of Polybius in the eighteenth century.
With the bookplate of the Repton School Library to the front pastedown, and their stamp to the title page head.
A smart edition of this major historical work.
Condition
In a half morocco binding, with paper covered boards. Light rubbing to back strip heads and tails, and tail of rear board. Joints starting, with boards a touch tender. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Stamp to title page head. Pages generally clean and bright, with only the odd spot.
