Description
Early Edition, First Edition
Two works, bound as one. These two titles regard the trial of several individuals who partook in the Tron riot of Edinburgh. A group of young men, including the Keellie Gang attacked and robbed wealth people who had gathered for Hogmany. A member of the watch, Dugald Campbell, was beaten with sticks and killed. The first work, has the trials of John Skelton, Neil Sutherland, Hugh Macdonald, Hugh Macintosh, George Napier, John Grotto, Robert Gunn, and Alex Macdonald. The aforementioned men committed murder and robbery on the streets of Edinburgh on December 31st 1811 and 1st January 1812. The second work is notes of conversations with three of the men whose trials are mentioned in the first work, Hugh McDonald, Neil Sutherland, and Hugh Mcintosh following their sentencing to death. Of sixty-eight arrests for the Tron riot, five men were sentenced to death. 'Notes of Conversations' is a second edition, 'Substance of the Trials' is a first edition. The conversational notes have been recorded by William Innes, minister of the Gospel. Innes published many sermons. Two very scarce works, which provide insight into criminal trials at the start of the nineteenth century. Both works are hard to find, the first one particularly so, and are not widely institutionally held. Both remain important primary sources for the events surrounding the Tron Riot.
