Description

Early Edition, Leather Binding

Present here are early editions of two of Scott's works, alongside volumes IV-VIII of the 1812 nine volume edition of 'The Works of Walter Scott', by Longman for A. Constable.

The two individual volumes present here are:

The 1815 fourth edition of 'The Lord of the Isles; A Poem', which follows Robert the Bruce and his battle for Scottish independence. Published in the same year as the first edition, and with the advertisement to the rear. Lacking the half title.

The 1813 fifth edition of 'Rokeby; A Poem', set in Teesdale during the English Civil War, and published in the same year as the first edition. Lacking the half title.

The five volumes from 'The Works of Walter Scott' each bear a general title page, and a second title page referring to the precise work they feature. Present in these volumes are:

Volume IV: The Lay of the Last Minstrel, the thirteenth edition.

Volume V: Marmion, the eighth edition.

Volume VI: Sir Tristrem, the third edition.

Volume VII: The Lay of the Lake, the ninth edition.

Volume VIII: The Vision of Don Roderick, the second edition.

With the bookplate of F. L. Hopkins to each front pastedown.

Condition

In diced calf bindings, with gilt detailing to board perimeters and back strips. Boards bright. Rubbing and instances of small losses of leather to back strip heads and tails. Front joint of 'Isles' and volume V starting, with boards firmly held. Rear hinge of volume V strained but firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean, with only the odd spot to first and last few leaves. 'Rokeby' leaves age toned, with significant spotting to perimeters.
