Description

Folding Plates, Illustrated, Original Binding

The eighth edition of this work.

In a contemporary cloth binding, with hinges reinforced and archival repair to the front free endpapers.

Illustrated with fifteen engraved plates, nine of which are folding, including a frontispiece view of Aleppo. Collated, complete.

Maundrell was an academic at Oxford University and later a Church of England clergyman, who served from late 1695 as chaplain to the Levant Company in Syria.

This work has become an often reprinted "minor travel classic", originating from the diary held by Maundrell on his Easter pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1697. Maundrell left Aleppo in a company of fifteen men, their circuit taking them to Latakia and to the ruinous state of Acre before proceeding inland to Jerusalem, where they attended Latin rite Easter services at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

A further travel journal is appended with this edition, 'A Journey to the Banks of the Euphrates at Beer, and to the County of Mesopotamia'.
