1811 A Treatise on the Defence of Portugal
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Early Edition, First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Very Scarce
Two highly desirable and scarce works, bound in a single volume.
The first of these two works is the 1811 second edition of William Granville Eliot's scarce work, 'A Treatise on the Defence of Portugal, with a Military Map of the Country'.
Illustrated with a partially hand coloured folding map frontispiece, and five folding maps of battle plans. Collated, complete.
The work analyses the military defence of Portugal during the Peninsular War, focusing on strategies to resist French invasion. The treatise is grounded in military observation and contemporary experience, offering both practical recommendations and commentary on the conduct of the war.
The second work is the vanishingly scarce first edition of the 1810 work 'A Sketch of the Campaign in Portugal', anonymously authored by the Hon. F. J. Robinson, afterwards Earl of Ripon.
Robinson, a British officer, draws from personal observation and official reports to describe the movements of the Allied forces under Wellington, engagements with the French, and the conditions of the campaign.
With a contemporary 1811 inscription to the verso of the front free endpaper.
