Complete in four volumes, and bound in straight grain morocco with blind tooling.
William Cowper was an prominent English poet and Anglican hymnwriter, termed "the best modern poet" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and viewed as a forerunner of Romantic poetry.
In these four volumes, an account of his life is provided by William Hayley, a biographer and personal friend of Cowper.
First published between 1803 and 1804, this work was compiled by Hayley shortly after Cowper's death in 1800.
Retaining the original half title to each volume.
Condition
In straight grain morocco bindings, with decorative blind tooling to back strips and board perimeters. Light rubbing to back strip heads and tails, raised bands and joints. Back strip lightly age toned, as is common with green leather. Front hinge of volume IV strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with instances of light spotting. Worming to head of final nine leaves and rear free endpaper of volume I, to head of final five leaves of volume II, final two leaves of volume III. This worming does not affect the text.
