Early editions of two early nineteenth century works on tree planting and forest management are present here, both the work of William Pontey.

The first of these works is the 1808 second edition of 'The Forest Pruner; Or, Timber Owner's Assistant', a 'treatise on the training or management of British timber trees'.

Illustrated with a frontispiece and seven plates, including four printed in sepia and hand tinted, three of which are folding. Collated, complete.

The second work is the 1809 third edition of 'The Profitable Planter; A Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Planting Forest Trees'.

Illustrated with one engraved plate. Collated, complete.

With an advertisement leaf to the rear of each volume.

Former owner's inscriptions to head of each title page.

Pontey was from a prominent family of Yorkshire nurserymen, and spent some time as head gardener to the Grimston family at Kilnwick. With the patronage of the sixth Duke of Bedford, he worked hard to improve the practices of replanting of trees on English estates.
