A fascinating account of the first British diplomatic mission to China led by George Macartney, as told through the eyes of his personal secretary John Barrow. Including his short residency at the Imperial Palace of Yuen-Min-Yuen, and a subsequent journey through the country, from Pekin to Canton.
Interwoven are observations of the Emperor's private life, Chinese social behaviours and customs, and amusements of the court - including a puppet show, wrestling, pantomime and fire-works.
Condition
Rebacked in full mottled calf with the contemporary boards. With red leather spine label. Externally, with a couple cracks to the front board and loss to the original rear board, which has a darkened area and marks. Bookplate of one Francis E. B. Witts to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Age toning up until p.339 and a few scattered spots. A couple chips to the front free endpaper. Contemporary ownership inscription to the title page.
