The fifteenth edition of Vicesimus Knox's collection of essays, in full tree calf. Complete in three volumes.
First printed in 1778, on the recommendation of Samuel Johnson, this collection originally totalled thirty-eight essays combining studies of classical literature, philosophy, and commentaries on the contemporary arts.
Vicesimus Knox was a teacher and an advocate for public education and instruction for boys through grammar schools rather than private home tutors. Knox was also an advocate for educating British women. He believed a good education was composed of lessons in Latin, Greek, geography, English, French, and writing.
With a prior owner's bookplate to the front paste down.
Condition
In full tree calf with gilt design to borders. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to boards and spine and the odd mark to the boards. Slight loss of gilt to spines and partial loss of spine label to first volume. Shelf wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned with spotting, heavier to the first and last few. Contains prior owner's bookplate to front paste down.
