Douce's 'Illustrations' with many in-text engravings throughout, and one folding plate and seven plates to Volume II.

Including a life of Shakespeare by Rowe, the text of Shakespeare's will, historical accounts, and an extensive glossary.

'Illustrations of Shakespeare and of Ancient Manners' by Francis Douce, a noted antiquary and museum curator for the British Museum. 

Bookplate of Robert Spankie to the front paste downs. Spankie was a journalist, barrister, and politician, who had a legal practice in his home in Russell Square. Much of his legal career focused on India, after marrying the daughter of a director of the East India Company.

Condition

In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards, rebacked with the original boards and spines restored. Externally, rubbed. Minor bumping to the spines and extremities. Small crack to the spine of Volume IX. A little loss to the spine label of Volume X. Front hinge of Volumes III and VI are starting but firm. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and with some odd spots and handling marks. Repair to page 125/126 of 'Henry IV part II' in Volume IV.
