First appearing in 1788, the journal Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh saw the first publication of countless important works of scientific research, and studies in humanities, social sciences and history.
Each in the publisher's original paper wraps, present here are Volume V Part II, Volume VI, and Volume VI Part II.
The first edition of Volume V Part II (1802), retaining half title. The seven essays in this volume include 'Description of an Extra-Uterine Foetus' by Thomas Blizzard, 'Meteorological Abstract for the Years 1797, 1798 and 1799' by Mr Playfair, and 'Chemical Analysis of an Uncommon Species of Zeolite' by Robert Kennedy.
The first edition of Volume VI Part II (1809), including 'Chemical Analysis of Black Sand' by Thomas Thomson, 'The Quadrature of the Conic Sections' by William Wallace, and 'Of the Solids of Greatest Attraction' by Playfair. Illustrated with four folding plates. Collated, lacking three plates.
A later edition of Volume VI (1812), with vignette illustration to title page. This volume includes a history of the society, alongside articled including 'Chemical Analysis of Sodalite' by Thomas Thomson, 'The Large Snake Alea-azagur' by James Russell and 'Remarks on a Mineral from Greenland' by Thomas Allan.
Condition
In the publisher's original paper wraps, with spine labels to back strip. Small losses of paper to back strip head and tail, with edgewear to wrap perimeters. Light tide marks and handling marks to front wrap of VI part II. Vol VI lacking rear wrap. Front joint head and tail of volume VI Part II starting, with wrap firmly held, but with tape repair to closed tear at head of front wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with spotting throughout. Lacking three plates to volume VI part II.
