    Leather Binding, Rebound, Scarce

    Bound in roan with marbled paper boards.

    These copies are an early 19th-century Didot stereotype reprint, reprinted using the stereotype process developed by Firmin Didot. First editions, thus.

    Jean‑François Regnard (1655–1709), celebrated by Richard Adolf Ploetz and Carl Julius Ploetz, as “the most distinguished, after Molière, of the comic poets of the seventeenth century”.

    These editions offer a complete five-volume collection of Regnard’s comedies, verse, and travel writings, consisting of:

    Volume I: La Sérénade, Le Bal, Le Joueur, Le Distrait.

    Volume II: Attendez-moi sous l’orme, Démocrite, Le Retour imprévu, Les Folies amoureuses, Le Mariage de la folie.

    Volume III: Les Ménéchmes, Le Légataire universel, La Critique du légataire, Les Vendanges ou le Bailli d’Anières.

    Volume IV: Sapor, Le Carnaval de Venise, Orphée aux Enfers, Le Bal, assorted poems and satires, and the travel narratives Voyage de Normandie and Voyage de Chaumont.

    Volume V (Travel writings): Voyage de Flandre et de Hollande, Du Danemarck, De la Suède, Voyage de Laponie, Voyage de Pologne, Voyage d’Allemagne. 

    Condition

    Rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in slight loss to roan. Slight rubbing to boards, resulting in slight loss to marbled paper boards. Two chips to head of volume IV, where the spine is slightly cracked. Upper joints of volume I slightly cracked. Upper joints of Volume V cracked, with around 2" loss to morocco at left-side head of spine. Slight loss to heads of spines of volumes I, II, and V. Slight offsetting with the odd spot to endpapers. damp stains to endpaper extremities caused by binding glue. Hinges slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned with the odd spot, heavier to first and last few leaves.
