The scarce first edition of Virgil's 'Georgics' to be translated by English poet and translator William Sotheby.

Virgil's works of poetry - initially published around 29 BC - are here translated into English by Sotheby, who upon his death was mourned by close friend Joanna Baillie: 'A more generous, high-minded, amiable man never lived, and this, taken together with his great talents & acquirements, makes a Character which cannot be replaced'.

Retaining half title.

With advertisement leaf to the rear.

With the bookplate of Henry Hamilton to the front pastedown.

Condition

In a half calf binding, with cloth covered boards. Significant loss of calf to back strip, with rubbing to board perimeters. Joints starting, with rear board firmly held and front board somewhat tender. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
