    Complete in two volumes.

    An vast and important English to Italian dictionary, with supplemental pronunciation, grammar, and definitions for thousands of English/Italian equivalents. 

    Baretti was inspired by Samuel Johnson's dictionary, and his own low opinion of Ferdinando Altieri's English-Italian dictionary.

    Baretti was an Italian literary critic, poet, writer and translator. He also wrote a similar dictionary of the Spanish Language, as well as dissertations on Shakespeare and Voltaire.

    A new edition of this work, originally published in 1760. This edition has been improved and augmented, with above ten thousand words omitted in the previous editions. Corrected by F. Damiani.

    Bookplate of Samuel Farmar Jarvis, D.D., to the front paste down. Jarvis was the celebrated first historiographer of the Episcopal Church.

    An ex-institutional copy from the General Theological Seminary Library, with labels to the front paste downs, and stamps.

    Condition

    In a full calf binding. Externally, worn and rubbed, with loss of leather to the boards. Tear to the head of the front joint. Institutional ink to the tail of the spine. Light bumping to the extremities. A small amount of loss to the head of the spine. Boards are a little discoloured with light marks. Front hinge is strained. Institutional labels to the paste downs, and a bookplate to the front paste down. Front endpaper is detached and chipped. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned and generally clean with scattered spots. The occasional institutional stamp, including to the title pages.
