Thomas Nugent's English translation of Baron de Montesquieu's renowned and important work of political theory, being an influential treatise of French law. The work is a classic of political history, and influenced many important people and works, including the Founding Fathers of the United States Constitution, and Catherine the Great's 'Nakaz'. The work was seen as controversial to some, and was eventually banned by the Catholic Church shortly after the English translation was published, and was added to their 'Index Librorum Prohibitorum'.

Condition
Bound in contemporary full leather. Externally smart with minimal edge wear and the joints starting slightly to the head. Bookplate of 'John Cheesment' to the front pastedown. The odd spot to the endpapers. Internally firmly bound with bright and generally clean pages with the odd spot.
