Tobias Smollett continued philosopher David Hume's work of the same name, which concluded publication in the 1750s. Smollett authored additional volumes, focusing on events in the eighteenth century.
With an engraved frontispiece to each volume, four further plates to volume I, one to volume II, and two to volume V.
Smollett is best known as an author. His works, including 'The Adventures of Roderick Random', 'The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle', and 'The Expedition of Humphry Clinker', inspired the likes of Charles Dickens.
With the bookplate of H. Jermyn to the front pastedowns, and of Brighouse to front free endpapers.

Condition
In full tree calf bindings, with gilt detailing. Small losses of calf to back strip head and tails, with rubbing to joints. Volume I front joint starting, with board somewhat tender. Head of front joint and tail of rear joint of volume V starting, with boards firmly held. Hinges strained, with boards firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns and free endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright, with the odd spot, most concentrated to first and last few leaves.
