1793 The Castle of Otranto, A Gothic Story
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Illustrated, Leather Binding, Scarce
A scarce 'New Edition' of a novel first published in 1764.
The title page retains the literary device of pretending that this work is a translation by "William Marshal" of a 16th century Italian manuscript by "Onuphrio Muralto", pseudonyms of Walpole.
Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece.
Set in a haunted castle, the novel merged medievalism and terror in a style that has endured ever since.
ESTC No T63202

Bookseller's label of T. D. Webster to front pastedown.
In the preface of the second edition, Walpole claims the novel is "an attempt to blend the two kinds of romance, the ancient and the modern."
