The first and most successful novel of Elizabeth Pinchard, an English writer of children's fiction whose stories always incorporated a moral lesson, usually aimed at older girls. In the preface for 'The Blind Child' Pinchard outlines her aim to "awaken in the rising generation" a "lively wish for goodness". A popular work, this was republished a number of times in England and America over the next 20 years.
The story follows a young blind girl who has her sight restored by surgery. After this life-changing act, the doctor praises the little girls sister for not showing "exaggerated feeling", highlighting the notion that true sensibility is far better than being false.
