Bound in half calf with marbled boards.

Comprised of Volume the First and Volume the Second of 'The Works of the Poets of Great Britain and Ireland with Prefaces, Biographical and Critical by Samuel Johnson', dated 1793 and 1795 as called for. Originally published in eight volumes between 1793 and 1802. 

The first edition of the work in this form with the addition of Irish poets, following on from a prior publication of 'The Works of English Poets' (1779) by Johnson. This particular set containing both English and Irish poets was then published in England in 1800. 

Containing various poetical works from John Milton, Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, Oliver Goldsmith, and many more.

Compiled, introduced and with biographical notes by English poet, essayist, literary critic and playwright, Samuel Johnson, who was best known for his extensive correspondence.

Condition

Bound in a contemporary half calf with marbled boards. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to the extremities and boards. Joints are a little rubbed, with hinges slightly strained, but holding firm. Bookplate of John W. Stewart to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound, with bright, clean pages. Ink inscription of Richard Sinclair Brooke to the title page, dated 1830.
