Smart was a poet of the eighteenth century, known infamously as his pseudonymous midwife "Mrs. Mary Midnight".

His best known works are 'A Song to David' and 'Jubilate Agno', though neither of those pieces are included in this work, 'Jubilate Agno' not being published until 1939. This set does include his mock epic 'The Hilliad' however, a comical literary attack on John Hill, published after a dispute between Hill and Henry Fielding, a widespread paper war.

Nowadays Smart is primarily recognised as a religious poet, his works discussing theories of nature, and English nationalism.

Smart's daughter was the noted romantic novelist Elizabeth Anne Le Noir.

Including a life of the author, who had died two decades before this publication.
