Uniformly bound in full tree calf.

Illustrated with plates, containing one to volume I, five to volume II, twenty-four to volume III, forty-one to volume IV, ten to volume V, twelve to volume VI, eight to volume VII and three to volume VIII. Lacking one plate to volume IV, according to a collation listed on Jisc.

The work of Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright and poet Oliver Goldsmith, first published in 1774.

A beautifully illustrated treatise on the animal kingdom, looking at birds, fish, insects and many more aspects of the natural world. The work sought to draw together all that was known about the planet and its plants and animals in the late eighteenth century.

With an unpaginated index to the rear of volume VIII.

Condition

Uniformly bound in full tree calf. Externally, sound, with rubbing to the extremities and joints, causing small cracks to joints and a little loss to the extremities. Lacking boards to II. Front board detached to I and VIII, with boards tender to III and IV, holding by cords only. Hinges strained to remaining volumes. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are age toned, with the odd mark. Tide mark to the first ten pages of III. Closed tear to the final plate of IV.
