The eighth edition of this work, first published in 1759.

Now known as 'The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abissinia', and originally titled 'The Choice of Life', this philosophical tale follows the journey of Prince Rasselas as he leaves his sheltered paradise to explore the world and discover the secret to human happiness.

Rebacked, retaining the original endpapers. With a 1795 inscription to the verso of the front free endpaper.

The work is often compared to Voltaire's Candide, which was first published in the same year.

Condition

Rebacked, in a tree calf binding, with marbled endpapers. Light rubbing to back strip head and tail and joints. Inscription to verso of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, with the odd spot.
