Complete in five volumes. Five volumes of Tobias Smollett's continuation of David Hume's 'History of England'. David Hume's history covered from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution of 1688. Smollett then continued the history, focussing his research on the eighteenth century. Tobias Smollett with a Scottish poet and author. He his best known for his novels 'Roderick Random', 'Peregrine Pickle', and 'Humphry Clinker'. Smollett considered his own 'History of England' to be his greatest works, as this was the work for which he received real financial success. During the time he was writing his 'History' he served a brief prison sentence for libel. David Hume was a Scottish historian, best known today for his philosophical work. He was ahead of his time in disbelieving the teleological argument for God's existence. He original published his 'The History of England' in six volumes from 1754 to 1763. He was one of the first historians to write more broadly, not just focusing on politics and royalty, but looking at literature and science as well. This work was a bestseller and make Hume very wealthy. With a frontispiece of a portrait of Smollett to Volume I. With a bookplate for Ronald Fuller to the front pastedown of each volume.

Condition

In the original full calf binding, though Volume II has been rebacked with the original boards laid on. Externally, with rubbing to the joints, extremities, and boards. Marking to the boards, being heavier to the boards of Volume V. Discolouration to the edges of the boards of all volumes, heavier to the rear board of Volume I. Some rubbing to the head and tail of the spines, with surface cracks to the spines also, to all volumes expect II. Bumping to the extremities, with some loss of leather. Volume III is lacking part of the spine label. Front board of Volume IV is held by cords only and may detach with further handling. Hinges of Volumes I and V are strained. Front hinge of Volume III is strained. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Blind stamp to the front endpapers, 'Sic Jovat Perlisse'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the very odd scattered spot. Heavy mark to the first few pages of Volume III.
