David Hume's history covered from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution of 1688. Smollett then continued the history, focussing his research on the eighteenth century. Smollett considered his own 'History of England' to be his greatest works, as this was the work for which he received real financial success. He was ahead of his time in disbelieving the teleological argument for God's existence. He original published his 'The History of England' in six volumes from 1754 to 1763. He was one of the first historians to write more broadly, not just focusing on politics and royalty, but looking at literature and science as well.
