What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Leather Binding

This set offers the first five volumes of this twelve-volume series, which covered two years across twenty-four parts. We therefore have five out of the six volumes that make up the First Year.

Two parts to each volume.

Scarce to find collected sets of this work.

Bound in full vellum.

A charming anecdotal French work containing the author's criticisms, historical short stories and observations of Parisian and non-Parisian society, arts and literature. Includes discussions of the Englishman in Paris, who deserves to be included in the history of men, an essay on Clementine, the power of paternal love and more.

From French poet, novelist and playwright François-Thomas-Marie de Baculard d'Arnaud, who distinguished himself by his literary gifts from a young age. After living a prominent life in Parisian society for several years, he withdrew from it to devote himself entirely to writing his numerous works. Delassements de l'Homme Sensible was one among them that enjoyed great popularity.

Condition

Bound in full vellum. Externally, hinges failed to Vol I. Front hinge strained to Vol II. These faults largely caused by uncalculated overextension of the boards, which works against the quite tight binding. Marks to the vellum. Armorial bookplate Arma Johannis Baronis Carteret de Hawnes to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot. Contemporary ink inscription to title page of Vol I.
