The very scarce first edition of this work, complete in two volumes.

Illustrated with twenty plates to volume I, and forty-one plates to volume II. 

Collated, complete.

Published posthumously by the author's son, Cooke's work employs coins to illustrate Roman history and the lives of the emperors.

A fascinating study of Roman history, from the first triumvirate to Constantine the Great, and including 'a general history of Roman medals'.

Condition

In full calf bindings, with gilt detailing to back strip and board perimeters. Small loss of calf to volume II back strip head and volume I back strip tail, with light rubbing to joints. Joint heads of volume I and head of front joint of volume II starting, with front board of volume I somewhat tender, and with other boards firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned due to paper type, with light offsetting to leaves facing plates, and the odd spot to page perimeters and first and last few leaves.
