A collection of essays considering questions of music philosophy, with reference to composition and arrangements, the matter or subject of a piece, the language of poetry, limitations of the form, and more. Including studies on laughter and the usefulness of classical learning. This piece was republished several times and translated into French in 1798. Corrections are printed to the rear. Written by James Beattie, a Scottish poet, moralist, and philosopher.

Condition

Bound in full modern cloth. Externally, excellent. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and minor age toning to the extremities. Library ink stamp and contemporary ink inscriptions to the title page, the reverse of the title page, and the front free endpaper. With library bookplates to the pastedowns.
