This 18th-century travelling pocket book provides a comprehensive overview of English sights, including chief villages, towns and cities, antiquities, parks, plantations, and "the two Universities, London, and Westminster". The whole arranged according to the respective counties.
Published here anonymously, the work is credited to English printer and author Philip Luckombe. The editor of dictionaries and encyclopædias, Luckombe also wrote books on printing, and made a study of conchology.
Condition
Bound in modern quarter calf, with marbled boards. Renewed endpapers. Externally, very smart indeed, with only minor signs of shelf wear and a small damp stain to the rear board's calf. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright, with minor toning and occasional spots - heavier scattered instances towards the rear. Offsetting to the half title and a contemporary ink inscription to the title page.
