Description

Folding Plates, Very Scarce

The second edition of this very scarce work. First published in 1773.

Comprising two parts.

Rebacked in speckled paper covered boards. With the hand-written title cut-out from the contemporary spine laid down.

Collated, complete with six folding engraved plates, each containing numerous figures.

A pioneering work on the construction and navigation of ships by Swiss polymath Leonhard Euler. The first part considers the ship in relation to equilibrium, on the buoyancy of the vessel and on the manner of reducing stability to a determined measure. The second part discusses the resistance that ships encounter in their progressive movements, and the action of the rudder.

Euler founded the studies of graph theory and topology and made influential discoveries in many other branches of mathematics. Among his extraordinary number of credits include the popularisation of the Greek letter π for pi, the Greek letter ∑ for summations and for being the first to use the notation f(x) for the value of a function.

A pleasing copy of this very scarce contribution to applied mathematics and engineering, from one of the founders of the modern theory of ships.

This copy previously held as part of the Scott Library Collection at the Institution of Naval Architects, presented by one Mr. R. E. Scott in July 1930.

Condition

Rebacked, with speckled paper laid down to the boards. With the hand-written title cut-out from the contemporary spine laid down. Externally, with toning to the contemporary spine label and a faded area to the tail of the spine, presumably where a reference label once was. Minor shelf wear. Institutional bookplate from the Institution of Naval Architects, presented by Mr R. E. Scott for the Scott Library Collection. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with occasional scattered spots, slightly more concentrated to the folding plates. Small contemporary ink inscription to the title page.
