First published in 1769, this is the work of Anglo-Irish poet, novelist, playwright, and hack writer Oliver Goldsmith, best known for the novel 'The Vicar of Wakefield'.
Goldsmith traces Rome’s development from its legendary founding by Romulus, through the Republic and the rise of the Empire, to the eventual fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD.

With the bookplate of John Thomson to each front pastedown, and the bookplate of Robert J Hayhurst to front free endpaper of volume I. Robert J. Hayhurst inherited and improved a successful group of retail pharmacies, John Hayhurst & Son, based in Nelson, Lancashire. He was a keen collector of naval history and of eighteenth-century literature in contemporary bindings.
Condition
In full calf bindings, with gilt detailing to back strip. Minor losses of calf to back strip heads and tails. Front joint heads and tails, and head of volume II rear joint, starting, with boards firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedown, and to front free endpaper of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned due to paper type, otherwise clean and bright.
