Description

Leather Binding, Original Binding, Scarce

This collection of ten letters were written from the author Laurence Sterne to Eliza Draper. Sterne has met and fallen in love with Draper in 1767, quickly becoming enchanted by her. Draper encouraged his attentions, they met frequently, and also exchanged miniature portraits, both obsessed with the other. After knowing each other for three months, however, Eliza had to return to India with her husband. They exchanged letters to each other during this time, however Sterne died of consumption a year later, so they never saw each other again. These ten letters of Sterne's were published by Draper after his death, though she didn't publish any of her own letters to Sterne. Laurence Sterne was a novelist and clergyman, best known for his 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy', and 'A Sentimental Journey Through France an Italy'. Sterne discovered his talent and love for writing late in his life, after writing 'A Political Romance' in support of his dean in a church squabble. After this, he dedicated himself to writing, beginning 'Tristram Shandy' and publishing in 1759. It was successful upon its publication, and he received a lot of praise and admiration for his work.
