Complete in two volumes.
Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece.
Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, addresses these letters to his illegitimate son, Philip Stanhope.
Edited by Eugenie Stanhope, the wife of Stanhope's illegitimate son to whom these letters are addressed, and published after his death left her in need of money. The letters contain discourse on language, geography, history, classical literature and politics.

With the armorial bookplate of Roland Hunt esq, Boreatton, to front pastedowns.
The letters served as a handbook on becoming a gentleman in eighteenth century society, and were immensely popular on publication for this very reason.
Condition
In contemporary mottled calf binding, with gilt detailing to spine labels. Back strips significantly age toned, as are board perimeters. Joints starting, with boards firmly held. Armorial bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned, but clean.
