The second edition, first published in 1769. 

A scarce work from the renowned Samuel Johnson, defending the 'Magna Carta', and providing a history on the medieval royal charter. The work discusses the progress in national freedom since the invasion on Caesar. The 'Magna Carta' was a royal charter of rights by King John from 1215, which aimed to promote peace between the king and a group of rebel barons. 

Includes the Magna Carta in the original French, with a translation to the opposite page.

Bound in full contemporary calf.

Condition

Bound in full contemporary calf. Externally, light staining and cracking to the spine with very slight loss to the head, and the slightest edge wear. Internally firmly bound with clean and bright pages. Pages v-vii roughly cut.
