This presents the arguments of the Duke of Hamilton and his family, who claimed that Archibald Douglas was not the real son of Lady Jane Douglas and therefore had no right to inherit the vast Douglas estates. The document sets out their evidence and reasoning in opposition to Archibald's claim of legitimacy and inheritance.

The events of the case are recounted in the 1971 play 'The Douglas Cause' by William Douglas Home. Home was himself a direct descendant of Archibald Douglas.
