Written by celebrated Anglo-Irish author, Oliver Goldsmith, this entertaining, comedy play was first performed at the Theatre Royal in Covent Garden on the 29th of January, 1768. The premier performance of this popular play starred a number of prominent eighteenth century actors, including Mary Bulkley, Isabella Mattocks, Ann Pitt, William Powell and Jane Green.

With the prologue of a thirty-line poem written by Samuel Johnson.

As with the performed version, the written version of this play became very popular with the reading public, being published in a number of different impressions in 1768.

It has been noted by Scott in his Goldsmith bibliography, that in that "there are so many differences in the type-setting between different copies of this first edition, that is quite impossible to say, with any approach to certainty, which is the first issue." (p211).
