The first folio edition of Voltaire's collected works. Present here are the first seven volumes only of a thirty volume set.
An impressive collection of the works of Voltaire, the influential writer of the French Enlightenment. He was famous for his outspoken wit, satire, and for his criticism of the Roman Catholic Church. Voltaire was a prolific author, writing more than twenty-thousand letters during his life, as well as more than two-thousand books and pamphlets. This set contains a collection of his prose and non-fiction works.
Volume I, 'La Henriade', published in 1768, illustrated with two frontispieces, and ten plates. Collated, complete.
Volume II, 'Histoire de Charles XII', published in 1768, illustrated with a frontispiece and one plate. Collated, complete.
Volume III, 'Theatre Tome I', published in 1768, illustrated with six plates. Collated, lacking the frontispiece.
Volume IV, 'Theatre Tome II', published in 1768, illustrated with five plates. Collated, complete.
Volume V, 'Theatre Tome III', published in 1768, illustrated with six plates. Collated, complete.
Volume VI, 'Theatre Tome IV', published in 1768, illustrated with six plates. Collated, complete.

Condition
In full calf bindings. Volume I rebacked, retaining the original endpapers. Minor losses of calf to back strip heads. Volume II-VI joints starting, with boards firmly held. Volume VII joints starting, with rear board a touch tender. Volume I front hinge strained, but firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Front free endpaper of vol. V tenderly held to head only. Internally, firmly bound. Volume II frontispiece detached and loosely inserted. Pages bright, and generally clean. Light tide marks to fore edge of leaves to the first half of volume I. Light spotting throughout volume I and IV, and further spotting to pages facing plates.
