Illustrated with monochrome frontispieces.
Richard Steele and Joseph Addison's newspaper 'The Guardian', with collaborations from the likes of Joseph Addison, Thomas Tickell, Alexander Pope and George Berkeley. The Guardian only ran for a short time from the 12th March to the 1st October, ending prematurely due to a fallout between Steele and the publisher Jacob Tonson.
The newspaper is most notable for including George Berkeley's stories titled 'The Pineal Gland', which are early examples of philosophical speculative fiction.
A complete two volume set.
Bound in a contemporary calf spine, re-backed with renewed boards.
