The very scarce second edition of this work, which was first published in 1708.
An account of the Halifax Gibbet, a guillotine-like device used by the town of Halifax to execute thieves, in use between 1286 and 1650, but mentioned by Daniel Defoe in his 'Tour through the whole Island of Great Britain' of 1724-27.
The work includes 'Revenge upon Revenge: or, An Historical Narrative of the Tragical Practices of Sir John Eland, of Eland' with a separate title page, but continuous pagination.

In 1650, Oliver Cromwell forbade the use of the gibbet and the structure was dismantled.
Condition
Rebound in calf, with endpapers renewed. Light rubbing to one raised band, otherwise externally excellent. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned due to paper type. Blind stamp to title page head. Loss and restoration to perimeters of frontispiece, repair to gutter of title page. Closed tear to final leaf, not affecting text. Tape repairs to perimeters of final leaf. Pages generally clean, with the odd spot.
