A first edition, complete in four volumes.

This was the first comprehensive collection of his Dryden's works.

With explanatory notes and observations, also an account of his life and writings by Samuel Derrick. 

These volumes contain his most popular works, including 'Astraea Redux', 'Annus Mirabilis', 'The Art of Poetry', 'The Hind and the Panther', and a selection of his other poetry.

Dryden was the first Poet Laureate, when the position was created in 1688 under King Charles II. He held the post until 1689.

Volume I lacks the portrait frontispiece. The front board of volume I is detached.

Illustrated with a small number of engraved headpieces.

With the bookplate of William Battell to the front pastedowns, and his inscription to the title pages.

Dryden was the dominating English literary figure in Restoration England, an era that is often dubbed the 'Age of Dryden'.

Condition

In full calf bindings. Boards bright, with back strips significantly ager toned, small losses of calf to back strip heads and tails, and significant loss to volume IV spine label. Small loss to volume I spine label. Front board of volume I detached. Volume II joints, and front joints of volumes III and IV starting, with boards holding firm. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Inscriptions to title pages. Spotting to title page heads and head of first few leaves of each volume, with pages otherwise bright, with the odd spot. Volume I lacking frontispiece.
