Bound in full calf. Bound without half title. 

A collection of military verses and writings in Greek, Latin and English, of the Greek elegiac poet from Sparta, Tyrtaeus. In his surviving works, Tyrtaeus presents his view of the ideal warrior, with themes of glory and disgrace, illustrating military ideologies such as solidarity, bravery and patriotism that helped shaped Spartan society.

Compiled by James Moore, a professor of Greek at the University of Glasgow, with a biographical introduction.

A very scarce work, dedicated to "The Young Gentlemen; Lately Bred at the University of Glasgow; at Present, Serving their Country, as Officers of the Highland Battalions now in America".

Illustrated with one copperplate portrait. Lacking one plate.

Condition

Bound in full calf, rebacked and with the spine laid down. Externally, generally smart, with rubbing to the extremities. Small holes to the tail of the front board. Light cracking to joints, with a little loss to the front joint head and rear joint tail. Front hinge is a little strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with tidemarks to the first and last few pages, mainly concentrated to margins.
