A mixed set of the second and third edition of this important work.

This work is a thorough history of England, documenting from the descent of Julius Caesar, to the Treaty of Aix la Chapelle in 1748, over roughly one thousand eight hundred and three years. The history focuses on the important events over the years, looking at each monarch and how they ruled, as well as looking at the lives of their people.

Volume III, the second edition, published 1758, with four plates. Collated, bound without one plate.

Volume IV, the third edition, published 1758, with four plates. Collated, complete.

Volume V, the third edition, published 1758, with eight plates. Collated, complete. 

Volume VI, the third edition, published 1759, with twenty-three plates. Collated, complete.

Volume VIII, the third edition, published 1759, with sixteen plates. Collated, complete. 

Volume IX, the third edition, published 1759, with eleven plates. Collated, complete. 

Volume X, the third edition, published 1759, with twenty-one plates. Collated, bound without one plate.

Written by the Scottish poet and novelist Tobias Smollett. He his best known for his novels 'Roderick Random', 'Peregrine Pickle', and 'Humphry Clinker'. Smollett considered his 'History' to be his greatest works, as this was the work for which he received real financial success. During the time he was writing his 'History' he served a brief prison sentence for libel.

Condition

In a quarter calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, a little worn and rubbed. Minor bumping to the extremities. Marks to the boards and spines. Small chip to the tail of the spine of Volume III. Cracks to the joints of Volume IX, and to the front joint of Volume X , and to the tail of the front joint of Volume VIII. Boards and spine of Volume III are faded. Chips to the spine labels, heavier to Volume XI. Spots to the leather. Fading to the spines of Volumes V, IX, and X. Front hinge is starting to Volume III. Hinges of Volume IX are strained, as is the front hinge of Volume X. Dampstain to the rear endpaper and rear paste down of Volume XI. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with scattered spots. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the title pages. Pages 343 to 346 in Volume III are detached but present, as are pages 103 to 106 of Volume VI. Small patch of worming to the first half of the text of Volume X, with no loss of text.
