An Edinburgh based minister, in this volume Carmichael presents nine sermons on 'a variety of important subjects', including sermons discussing 'Anxiety and Sollicitude', 'The Folly and Danger of delaying to enter upon a Religious Life', and 'The Obligation to Brotherly Love deduced from the Love of God to us'. Each sermon is accompanied by a Biblical passage.
With this edition released six years after Carmichael's death, it was 'published for the benefit' of his surviving family.

Condition
In a full calf binding. Rubbing to back strip head and tail, head of front joint starting, with board holding firm. Rear hinge starting, with board holding firm. Inscriptions to pastedowns. Loss of paper to tail of front pastedown. Lacking front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned due to paper type, with significant handling marks and area of discolouration throughout.
